What to Pack On a Surf Trip

If you’re anything like us then you’re always down to chase a good wave, and love nothing more than gathering your crew for either a day trip or overnight adventure to your nearest point break. Over the years we’ve come to know the essentials that make for a surf trip that doesn’t end in third degree sunburn or a permanently wet butt. Here are the top five things we always pack when heading out for a perfect paddle:

1. Wetsuit or Surfsuit, depending on climate

This one seems super obvious, but of course you’re going to want something that supports and protects you while you have your fun in the sun. Whilst a traditional wetsuits is great for cooler temperatures and offers more padding (great for those pesky hip bruises - if you know, you know)  there is also now the option of a surf suit which is essentially a one piece swimmer with long sleeves. These are absolute genius in our opinion, because they protect you from the hot summer sun and board rash without the chance of overheating like you would in a wetsuit. Some of our favourite places to find a surf suit include Salt Gypsy who makes high quality and super cute swim and surfwear for the girllssss. We’ve never looked so good whilst riding a wave! For a cheeky discount use code WILDWOMEN10 at checkout. 😜

2. Zinc Sunscreen

Another no brainer is a good quality zinc sunscreen that stays put in the water. Too many times have we all ended up glowing with a sunburn at the end of a surf trip, and that is no good for your skin. Just because you surf doesn’t mean you need to end up with leather like skin - there’s stuff for that! Our favourites include the Sun Bum face stick and the Sun Butter Tinted Face SPF 50 Reef Safe Face Sunscreen which are sure to keep you looking as young as you feel! Not a day over twenty one, obviously!

3. Quick Drying Towel or a Sarong

This is SO much better than a regular towel. How many times have you been in and out of the water all day and ended up with a soggy and gross towel to come back to. At this point you’re not sure what’s drying what - you the towel, or the towel you? Anyway, this little misery can all be avoided if you invest in a quick drying towel like this Sea to Summit Drylite Towel or these Mont Flora MicroFibre Travel Towels. You’ll thank us later, but we’ll say you’re welcome now ;)

4. Dry Bag

Again, this is about preventing the ‘everything is wet or damp’ situation. A dry bag allows you to either store all your dry clothes and prevent them getting wet or for storing your wet goods like swimmers etc so they don’t contaminate your dry things with moisture. We’d recommend the first option, as no one likes dank bikinis and wetsuits that have been marinating in their own dampness. Ick! This Sea To Summit Three Piece Dry Bag Set is great to get you started, and it helps keep all your gear really well organised too. If you’re a colour coded wardrobe kind of gal then these will make you extra happy!

5. Surf Lock or Key Safe

Okay these are a game changer. No more ‘what do I do with my keys while I surf’ and hiding them in your towel, hoping for the best. A combination key safe surf lock lets you lock in your keys with a special code, and hook it onto your car exhaust for super security whilst you carve up that nice little right hander with complete peace of mind. Well worth the investment and something that will last through the ages no matter how much sea air it gets exposed to. These Key Safes are made to withstand the elements! Also great for big time hikers and climbers who don’t want to risk losing their keys on a trail.

A well prepared surf trip is the best kind of surf trip so make sure you are ready for whatever the ocean brings your way. We simply don’t head out without these top five essentials, and remember, the best surf trips are about the journey as much as the destination. So take the time to enjoy every moment, connect with fellow surfers, and embrace the adventure. With these must-haves in your arsenal, you’ll be all set for an unforgettable surf getaway!
